Why are regular dental exams important?
Getting routine dental checkups and exams allows us to discover and you to address any issues with your oral health early when they are easier to treat, and before they lead to discomfort.
During a checkup, we do more than clean your teeth and gums. We look for signs of any oral health issues, including inspecting the teeth, gums and tongue. If an issue should be found, we can treat it as soon as possible. We can also go over effective cleaning methods and make recommendations to help keep your teeth healthy.

What to expect during a dental checkup
Generally, for people with a healthy mouth, we recommend our patients to visit us every six months. For patients with certain oral risks, and those with high-risk factors for periodontal disease, we will often recommend more frequent visits to address these specific issues.
During your dental exam appointment we will collect information about your overall health, including any medical conditions and/or allergies you may have. This information gives us a clearer picture of your oral health and how to best tailor our services to each patient.
One of our experienced dental hygienists will take care of the first part of your exam which may include x-rays and a thorough cleaning of your teeth and gums. During this process the hygienist will look for any issues and report them to the dentist.
Once the cleaning and polishing is done one of our dentists will come in to see you. During this time they will:
- Complete a quick teeth check-up.
- Examine your gums, soft palette, throat and neck, and check for any abnormalities.
- Review any X-rays that may have been taken.
- Recommend any additional dental work you might need to maintain oral health.
- Discuss your overall oral health and habits.
